Construction and Architecture

Construction Student

If so, you should check out the programs in the Construction and Architecture cluster!

Enrolling in a program within the Construction cluster opens the door to the exciting world of art and science behind careers in architecture and construction. These programs give you the opportunity to work with your hands and use building tools to bring your ideas to life. You will master concepts and practices that enable you to work in state-of-the-art construction labs and ensure that you are prepared to continue your studies in college or to enter the field of carpentry, HVAC, electricity, welding, plumbing or another type of residential construction.

Architecture

As a student in the Architecture program, you will learn the basic principles of architecture and learn to use the latest technology to design building and complete architectural drawings. You will master architectural skills such as preparing preliminary drawings and basic layouts; producing working drawings; and creating computer aided drafts.

Cabinet Making

As a student in the Cabinet Making program you will learn to design and build residential furniture. You will be instructed on and practice using tools and machines that include table saws, radial arm saws, portable circular saws, drilling and boring machines and routers. Students learn skills necessary to construct cabinets and other interior wood-working structures. In addition to the tools you use, you will also learn design layout and measuring techniques, methods of jointing woods by various types of woodworking joints and fasteners, and proper procedures for finishing wood products.

Carpentry

As a student in Carpentry you will learn to estimate materials, prepare building sites, install rough framing, and install exterior and interior finishes. Some of your hands-on experiences will include working in the lab to prepare foundations; install rough framing, exterior finishes and interior finishes basic framing (wall, floor, and roof); and choosing types of framing materials. At the end of the program you will have gained the skills needed to design and construct buildings.

Electricity

As a student in the Electricity program you will learn the skills necessary to wire interior of buildings. You will practice selecting the size and type of wire installation necessary for installation of furnace motors, vent fans, 3-4 way switches, and switch boxes in drywall.

HVAC and Refrigeration

As a student in the HVAC and Refrigeration program you will learn skills necessary to install and maintain heating and cooling systems. Some of the tasks you will learn to perform include, brazing, soldering, and using gauges to set temperature relationships. At the end of the program you will have the knowledge and skills to service residential and commercial refrigerators, window and central air conditioners, ice machines, forced air furnaces, dehumidifiers and humidifiers.

Plumbing

As a student in the Plumbing program you will learn to cut pipes, join copper tubing and strip pipes, install water tanks. In addition to the technical skills you will gain, by the end of this program you have the ability to estimate costs for installation and repair jobs, keep record of equipment failures, and interact with clients, all necessary for being successful in any construction career you may choose.

Welding

As a student in the Welding program, you will learn to permanently bond metal parts. You will practice joining ferrous and nonferrous metals. By the end of the program you will understand the various techniques of welding that will allow you to use your skills in different ways. For instance if you enjoy following instructions to create uniform items you may pursue careers that involve repairing cars, appliances, highway bridges, but if you enjoy creative freedom you may try your hand at creating metal art.

How to Participate

College and Career Academy Application

8th Graders who want to participate in a College and Career Academy, should apply by December 14, 2012.

Freshmen who are attending a school with a College and Career Academy or CTE School Option program who wish to participate should speak with their counselor.
